Qualified Charitable Distribution

The Internal Revenue Service allows eligible older taxpayers a great way to easily give to charity. Donations to charity can be made through a “Qualified Charitable Distribution” (QCD) by an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) owner age 70½ or over when the distribution is made. QCDs count toward the IRA owner's required minimum distribution for the year. An IRA owner who wishes to make a QCD should contact his or her IRA trustee to complete the transaction before the end of the year. Normally, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they are paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization. A check may be made payable to the designated charity and given to the IRA owner for forwarding to the charity, or the funds may be paid directed to the charity by the IRA trustee.
